On Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. EST, the U.S. Department of Education (ED), Office of Safe and Healthy Students (OSHS), along with its Readiness and Emergency Management (REMS) Technical Assistance (TA) Center and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), hosted a webinar on the importance of cybersecurity and network protection at colleges and universities.

As part of the President's plan to make our schools, IHEs, and communities safer, the U.S. Departments of Education, Justice, Homeland Security (DHS), and Health and Human Services created the Guide for Developing High-Quality Emergency Operations Plans for Institutions of Higher Education. ED provided an overview of the approach the Guide recommends IHEs use related to emergency operations planning. DHS provided an overview of the landscape of cyber threats facing colleges and universities, as well as DHS resources, programs, and tools to help colleges and universities maintain secure networks and prevent cyber attacks. In coordination with their Federal partners and the private sector, DHS responds to cyber incidents, provides technical assistance to owners and operators of critical infrastructure, and disseminates notifications regarding current and potential security threats and vulnerabilities.

This Webinar included a live PowerPoint presentation, as well as a Question and Answer session following the presentation.

Please note that a sudden, building-wide evacuation precluded the presenters from delivering the presentation, and it was instead presented by Akshay Jakatdar of the REMS TA Center.
