The Department’s OSSS and its REMS TA Center hosted a Webinar to highlight and discuss the role school nurses have in supporting overall school safety, security, emergency management, and preparedness before, during, and after an emergency. During this Webinar, presenters provided an overview of the foundational elements of the Guide for Developing High-Quality School Emergency Operations Plans by six Federal agencies and discussed the importance of including school nurses in supporting the before, during, and after aspects of an emergency. Presenters also discussed the roles school nurses play in the development of school emergency operations plans (EOPs) and emergency-specific annexes. Additionally, presenters identified specific roles school nurses can serve in and actionable tasks they can perform to help implement preparedness efforts.

Presenters for this Webinar were Madeline Sullivan, Management and Program Analyst at the Department‘s OSSS; Elizabeth Clark, M.S.N., RN, NCSN from the National Association of School Nurses; Janelle W. Hughes, Project Director of the REMS TA Center; and Alison Curtis, Director of Information & Product Management at the REMS TA Center. The presentation concluded with a question-and-answer session.

The Department‘s OSSS and its REMS TA Center hosted this Webinar to provide K-12 schools, school districts, regional education agencies, and state education agencies, along with their community partners, with information on how to collaborate with school nurses on emergency management planning. While the live Webinar offered opportunities to respond to individual and unique questions from stakeholders and practitioners, the archived Webinar serves as a resource to help education agencies collaborate with school nurses on safety, security, emergency management, and preparedness activities.
