The Department’s OSSS and its REMS TA Center hosted a Webinar to highlight and discuss the role school psychologists can play in supporting emergency operations plan (EOP) development as well as overall school safety, security, emergency management, and preparedness before, during, and after an emergency. During this Webinar, presenters provided an overview of the foundational elements of the Guide for Developing High-Quality School Emergency Operations Plans by six Federal agencies and discussed the importance of including school psychologists in supporting the before, during, and after aspects of an emergency. Presenters also discussed the roles school psychologists play in the development of school EOPs, including functional and threat- and hazard-specific annexes. Additionally, presenters highlighted specific roles school psychologists can serve in as they support school safety, security, emergency management, and preparedness, as well as actionable tasks they can perform to help implement preparedness efforts.

Presenters for this Webinar were Madeline Sullivan, Management and Program Analyst at the Department’s OSSS; Ben Fernandez, M.S. Ed., school psychologist from the National Association of School Psychologists; Christina Conolly, Psy.D., NCSP, Director for Psychological Services with Montgomery County Public Schools; Bronwyn Roberts, Esq., Strategic Director of the REMS TA Center; and Candace Ferguson, M.P.A., Training & Technical Assistance Senior Research Associate at the REMS TA Center. The presentation concluded with a question-and-answer session.

The Department’s OSSS and its REMS TA Center hosted this Webinar to provide K-12 schools, school districts, regional education agencies, and state education agencies, along with their community partners, with information on how to collaborate with school psychologists on emergency management planning. While the live Webinar offered opportunities to respond to individual and unique questions from stakeholders and practitioners, the archived Webinar serves as a resource to help education agencies collaborate with school psychologists on safety, security, emergency management, and preparedness activities.
