The REMS TA Center hosted a Webinar to highlight the role of students in school safety, security, emergency management, and preparedness. During this Webinar, presenters demonstrated the importance of developing a collaborative planning team to support emergency operations plan (EOP) development, as outlined in Step 1 of the six-step planning process detailed in the Guide for Developing High-Quality School Emergency Operations Plans. They discussed the ways students can enhance the six-step planning process. Additionally, presenters provided examples of how students can offer key insights into threats and hazards commonly reported by other students as well as strategies that can be used to support safety efforts. Presenters shared resources to be used by students and core planning teams.

Presenters for this Webinar were Sue Graves, Safety Coordinator of the Lincoln County School District; Alicenn Tolan, student at the Lincoln County School District; and Janelle Williams, Project Director at the REMS TA Center. The presentation concluded with a question-and-answer session.

The U.S. Department of Education and its REMS TA Center hosted this Webinar to provide K12 schools, school districts, regional education agencies, state education agencies, and their community partners with information on how to collaborate with students on emergency management planning. The live Webinar offered opportunities to respond to individual and unique questions from stakeholders and practitioners, and the archived Webinar serves as a resource to help education agencies collaborate with students on school safety, security, emergency management, and preparedness.
