IMPORTANCE OF TRAINING

While most states do not require adult sexual misconduct (ASM) awareness and prevention training, some school districts provide this training to staff, students, and volunteers (U.S. Government Accountability Office [GAO], 2014). Because schools play a primary role in the lives of children, comprehensive, high-quality training is needed in all schools to help staff members

  • recognize appropriate and inappropriate behaviors in their interactions with students;
  • identify the early warning signs of ASM effects in children;
  • detect the patterns of ASM behavior in adults;
  • respond appropriately when an ASM incident is suspected; and
  • follow the school’s policies and procedures for reporting ASM, which must be consistent with state laws and general counsel guidance.
