A major order of business in planning at both the district and the school levels is to understand the unique situation of each school and the surrounding community so that a customized plan can be developed for each school. For example, only one school in the district may be near a highly trafficked commercial area; only one school may be near train tracks; or one school may be in a tsunami zone. The district can provide guidance, as explained in Step 2. It begins by identifying the universe of possible threats and hazards that schools throughout the district might face. Then, the district needs to support each school core planning team as it prioritizes the threats and hazards. The team
- Receives the master list of threats and hazards from the district, identifies those to go on the school’s individualized list, and conducts assessments to determine the threats and hazards on the district’s master list that could impact the school;
- Evaluates the level of risk and vulnerability posed by the identified threats and hazards; and
- Prioritizes the threats and hazards
Step 2 Outcomes
After completing Step 2, the school core planning team has received a master list of threats and hazards from the district and conducted assessments to determine which of them are applicable at the school, evaluated the risk posed by identified threats and hazards, and prioritized threats and hazards.
